International Babywearing Week – Why I Wear My Babies

October 12, 2010 under Babywearing

So I kinda missed the boat for International Babywearing Week seeing as it started last week and ends today but I thought that I would share why I wear my babies anyway.

When I first heard of babywearing I must admit that I thought it was a little weird. This is not something my mother did and so I thought that it was one of those things that mothers who spoiled their children did. Well after studying and reading up on it I realized especially after I had my first child that mothers did for a piece of mind. There is something so perfect about wearing you little one close to your heart!

So after deciding that it wasn’t so weird I started looking in to different carriers. Of course at that point I only knew about all the name brand carriers and the price point of these carriers were far above what I could afford so babywearing kinda got put on the side.

When I started The Life of a College Stay-At-Home Mom I started running in to bloggers who were avid baby wears and so I started learning about all the off brand carriers. Then even better I found patterns to make my own! So I fell in love with the Moby Wrap and I made a few of my own.

So some of my biggest reason for wearing my babies are:

  1. I love having my babies up close to my heart all the time.
  2. It makes life so much easier when you have several children because you can spend time or help out your older children while having the baby right with you all the time.
  3. I love that when everyone is sick that I can keep my babies form everyone touching them by wearing them.
  4. I am not sure how I would do shopping by my self right now if I couldn’t wear my baby. Its already crazy enough!
  5. When baby is fussy and want to be held but you have a million things to do put them in a carrier.
  6. You can breastfeed while babywearing which makes taking care of baby and other children at the same time easy.
  7. There are so many benefits for baby when babywearing! (here are just a few from Dr. Sears – http://www.askdrsears.com/html/5/t051100.asp#T051103)

Those are just a few of the reasons that I babywear. I have soooo many other ones!

Oh and for all those who think babywearing is dangerous… ITS NOT!! Sure there are carriers that are but if you do your research you will find there are only certain ones that are. In fact I find that my babies are MUCH safer when I wear them then when I do not!

    Moby Wrap – Lotus Hold

    April 20, 2010 under Babywearing
On Sunday I posted a link for Moby Wrap’s new sling style hold on my facebook page and because of that I got questions about the basic holds for the Moby (or whatever wrap you have). So I decided that I would do my first video post and show everyone how to do a forward facing hold in the wrap. The inspiration for the video came from Jenni over at The Deiderich Family Blog after she complained that many of the videos that she came across always used baby dolls or stuffed animals. So I will be using my son Mathew :)
(Forgive the poor quality and everything else not up to par!)

Hope this was helpful to those wondering about a forward facing hold. Keep an eye out for a new video post next week on the wrap and if you have any questions post them below!

    Baby K’Tan: Review & Discount

December 8, 2009 under Babywearing, review

So for next few weeks I will be highlighting nursing and baby products that have made my life easier as the mother of a 1 1/2 year old and new born. Today’s review is the baby carrier Baby K’tan.

With the birth of my son Mathew I have really been looking into baby carriers as I wanted to be able to have him close while chasing around my 15 month old daughter. Now if you know Samantha you know that I need something simple but secure. Samantha is always climbing, running, and generally causing small hurricanes where ever she goes so if I am going to have Mathew strapped to me it better hold up. When Samantha was little I bought a Moby Wrap because it seemed to be the most secure carrier for my wiggly girl. It quickly became my favorite carrier as it was the most comfortable carrier that I had tried. I wore Samantha in it everywhere. The only thing that I did really like was all the wrapping that you had to do before getting the baby in. So with Mathew’s birth I decided that I would look for something that had the same amount of comfort but easier to put on. That is when I came across the Baby K’tan.

The Baby K’tan holds the baby very much the same way the the wrap does but it has two loops to put on in stead of all the wrapping.

What makes the Baby K’tan different from other carriers?

    • Easy to use and put on; NO WRAPPING (see instructions)
    • Unique figure 8 design and sliding lumbar band (patent pending) offers greater support for back and shoulders
    • Over 8 positions from preemie to preschool (42 lbs.)

My take on the Baby K’tan

The Baby K’tan took awhile for me to get use to even though it is really easy to use but that is just me because I always take awhile to get use to a new carrier. The first time that I wore it was when Mathew was only a few days old and I wore him in the cradle position and I walk quite a ways with him. The Baby K’tan lived up to my expectations of being like my wrap and being comfortable. It also worked great as a carrier for very little babies. Mathew was 7lbs 4oz, so pretty small and I know that there are carriers that you have to wait till they get to a certain weight. This will also work for older babies though I have not yet tried it with my daughter but that is good to know as its nice to have a carrier that works for younger and older babies.

The only negative think I do have to say is that I am not sure I felt that it is as secure as my wrap. Not that I felt like Mathew was going to fall out or anything its just that the Baby K’tan does not wrap around you the same and so I felt like I didn’t have as much carrying him as I like. I really like to have lots of support for Mathew and myself. So I still have to say that the wrap is still my favorite for that reason.

Altogether I love the Baby K’tan and I will be using it a lot when I need a back up for my wrap.
